If you’re fixing up an old property, there’s a good chance that you will be requiring the help of a roofing company in the process. That’s because the chances are high that the home is in need of plenty of repairs, what one would call a fixer-upper. But sometimes, old homes come with nasty surprises that need a little bit of specialization to handle. One of these is an issue with asbestos.
Why Worry About Asbestos?
Asbestos is a metal that can be found in many of the building materials used up until the 20th century. It was utilized specifically because it’s such a great insulating material; thus, it was usually mixed into the components used to build old roof tiles and attic insulation, among others. It was an easy way to increase the insulative properties of a building.
However, it’s also an incredibly toxic mineral. The inhalation of asbestos fibers is a cause of serious illnesses including lung disease and several cancers, and is estimated to cause quite a number of deaths per year. Removing roof components that may have asbestos components will require experienced roofers with asbestos-removal certification.
Should You Worry About Asbestos?
Is your fixer-upper likely to contain asbestos components? The older the property is, the more likely it is to contain parts with asbestos. The first thing you need to do is to resist checking by yourself, since any mistake you may make in the process is liable to lead to the accidental spread asbestos fibers.
Start checking for asbestos by looking into the history of your property. If you have access to any of its papers – including repair work done on the roofing, walls and piping – see if you can contact the contractor behind the work to find out if the material they used contains asbestos insulation.
If the contractor is unavailable, or if you don’t have the paperwork available, it’s time to get the help of a professional inspection crew. Look for somebody with experience with asbestos inspection and removal, as they will have had the necessary training to spot and effectively remove materials with asbestos components.
